OUR FOCUS is to keep this wonderful and non commercial but very influential music alive
We promote the arts and local businesses, build community, education; we are a tourism destination, and are helping keep one of the original African American OK Townships alive and thriving. We build community and work to make Eastern OK a great place to live.

We can only do this with help. Become an attendee, sponsor, or contributor, your tax-deductible donation can do a lot to help us! Our sponsors help to achieve our goals of having an outstanding Rentiesville Blues Festival and help with our other endeavors. We appreciate your support!
The way we work to keep this wonderful, non commercial but very influential music alive and thriving with a FOUR POINT APPROACH:
PLAY  the music; Blues on the Move with Selby Minner hosts an ongoing Sunday Jam Session here at the Blues Club since 2010,
TEACH the BABIES; ongoing affordable or even free lessons, in Muskogee at the MLK Center, Checotah Library, Holdenville Arts Center, at Rentiesville.
HONOR the ELDERS; inducting them while they are alive …we have over 150 on the walls in the OBHOF/Blues Club, and
EMPLOY THOSE WHO PERFORM IT WELL – that is the Labor Day Weekend Festival, which employs 200 musicians annually and is in it’s 31st year. – and we appreciate your support!

And recently we added DOCUMENTATION – The Rentiesville Blues Festival is a showcase of Regional blues (20 OK Groups) and national headliners. We managed to document this on line in 2019 with our 20 hour virtual Blues Festival in Cyberspace (link through at dcminnerblues.com/about) The 20 Oklahoma Bands received DVD and CD masters of their sets which they can sell themselves thanks to OAC and OH funding, and donor Hilary Conley.

If you appreciate . . .
the good work we do, come see us and have fun! We believe that the Blues is some of the world’s best party music …. or you can help us by becoming a sponsor. Your donation can do a lot to help us with our mission. … Either way, we appreciate your support!

Proceeds are used to pay some 200 musicians , security and those who handle the money. Most everyone else you see on the field is a volunteer.

Please join us to make the Rentiesville Blues events a fun-filled journey of the blues music genre and a celebration of the Rentiesville OK Blues Hall of Fame, one of the last surviving juke joints, and birthplace of blues man D.C. Minner!
We do Blues in the Schools, run the Oklahoma Blues Hall of Fame- we induct  people and honor them with trophies in May- The D.C. Minner Rentiesville Museum.  Our presentation of the Rentiesville Dusk til Dawn Blues Festival is a builder of community and employment for some 200 musicians. We collaborate with other Arts Organizations and related non -profits.

Here is hoping the Voice of Praise Baptist Church Men’s Chorus makes it in from OKC. Their pastor Rev Tony Wise is D.C.’s cousin. Walter Taylor lll (OBHOF singer and drummer) then Selby Minner at 8 and Harold Jefferson from OKC and Lawton. Johnny Rawls – a festival staple and winner of the Blues Foundation’s Soul Blues Artist of the Year (won it – plus 11 nominations for it!) and Soul Blues Album of the Year…”California Shake”….. will get everyone up and dancing as he croons and plays his guitar! Alex Lopez is ‘Rising Up’ as the title of his new album attests – out of Cleveland OH… powerhouse.

SUNDAY CLUB STAGE

Kevin Vaughn from Dallas, bassist and his UpTown Blues Show…Back Up Blues Band, Martin and the Dead Guys in from KS. Martin was a Nashville Song Writer for many years. His songs tell great stories. Kenny Diggs D’Elegantz soul funk blues! ‘Elvis’ and Truck Full of Blues in from Shawnee.. Jam Session with Lem Sheppard just like Saturday Nite… Selby Minner band and Alice April, then Queen Iretta and Johnny B Sanders, Johnnie Rawls and Watermelon Slim to take us into the Night. I am sure Tammy Ridgeway will be on traps, too.

SUNDAY BACK PORCH STAGE

Local group FauntLeRoy and the Pickled Okra Playboys, then Lamont form the Folklife Society and Watermelon Slim- who helped us build this Festival – back in the nineties before he won all the awards and started touring the world returns to home port the Back Porch Stage!

Come on out – let’s put the grief and isolation of Covid (19 new pounds (?) ) behind us and heal …you know music can do that. Grab a friend…If you need to, VOLUNTEER. It takes a lot of people to put on a Festival. If you help us out for three hours (before of during or after the event) you get your $18 admission fee back and a half price discount on a T Shirt!! Meet new people …If you come by yourself, volunteering sure beats sitting alone.

So –  “Hey Everybody – Tell Everybody… that in Oklahoma , hidden out in the woods is a little old Juke Joint called the Down Home Blues Club, It’s authentic, funky and very much alive!

It’s been there since OK Blues Man D.C. Minner’s grandmother Lura opened up a bootleg corn whiskey bar in 1936. Now, however, the bootleg whiskey is gone. You can get a cold beer or a soda, Selby makes beans, and sometimes people bring potluck, but it’s all about the music. The club hosts a free jam session party every Sunday. Musicians show up with cases and the years roll back. Part of the magic is in the music played there, but the room itself has a grittiness and authenticity both palpable and intoxicating. It is rural and real in a sense that other venues fail to capture. For those of us who long to feel the power of the Blues, try Rentiesville!” – Domenica Lovera, founding member of FOR Blues inc. As D.C. always said “The guitar sounds different at 3 in the morning. the air is thicker then. You haven’t heard the guitar until you hear it at 3 am. “

Such a different year… my favorite part of the Festival has always been seeing everybody here having fun together ..but… as you know we have to adapt to keep each other well… It would be irresponsible to invite 2000 or more people to D.C. Minner’s old home place and the Festival here in Rentiesville this year.

..So sad…. BUT….The Show Must Go On! …so …

we have a very kind appraisal for the Oklahoma Arts Council who is funding most of this process..
Grant Reviewers appreciated strong community support demonstrated with diversified income sources. Extensive marketing efforts aim to reach local, regional, and national audiences. Reviewers noted that the applicant continues to strengthen proposals and build on the success of the event every year. The festival plays a major role in the community and supports tourism and economic development in the area.
Funding is awarded to support artistic fees.

A few years back,  National Geographic Traveler wrote “on Labor Day weekend, join other blues-lovers at the one of the “10 most awesome music festivals to check out this summer“…in the world! ”

Non-stop music from dusk ‘til dawn on three stages, arts and activities just for kids, great food including barbecue, and a down-home, family-friendly uncommercial vibe draws people from all over to this small-town festival in eastern Oklahoma!

Now in its 30th year, you will feel at home from the moment you arrive. If you want a dose of authentic, and down home, this is the place! Festival photos

2019 Headliners Include: Knut Roppestadt (Norway), Bex Marshall (England), Watermelon Slim, Ronnie Stewart & The Oakland Blues Divas, Funkativity (Washington DC), Johnny Rawls (Soul Blues Artist Winner “California Shake”), Kelvin ‘Mr. Guitar’ Drake (toured world with Clarence Carter and worked with Solomon Burke and Bonnie Raitt), Harold Aldridge, Last Call, Pat Moss, Mike Moore Big Band, Jim Davis CHS Jazz Band, Roger Hurricane Wilson, Shy Willie, Leon Rollerson, D’elegantz, Sir Stan From La, Oklahoma Ollie In (Louisiana), Bebo McDaniel Trio, Cece Craig, Eric Little Brother Walker, Alice April, Sunsetter, Hydramatics, Craig Vaughan, John White, Cecil Gray, Wewoka Blues Band, Akeem Kemp (placed in IBC Youth Challenge in Memphis representing Arkansas), Selby Minner and Blues On The Move, Mike Moore Big Band, Bonnie McCoy (niece of the late great Memphis Minnie), Harley Cowboy Hamm (Checotah)…10+ Oklahoma Blues Hall of Famers on the show!

The Kid’s Village: (children under 12 are free and we keep them busy having fun while the music soaks in!) The OK State Arts Council roster artists and funding through a series of grants has helped keep the festival alive over these 21 years. Kid’s Village would not be complete without Joann McMillan and her stick puppets (which require lots of little hands to make them dance across the field).

Comments include: “World’s best – and largest – back yard party!”  “This is peace as the world should know it!” A blues festival that is truly unique as it is a family event with lots for children to do – but not after midnight in the old Juke Joint – adults only, please!  “You can see all the headliners by 11 pm, but night owls keep on and dig the blues from 5 pm til 5 am.”

Created by D.C. Minner himself with, and now presented by Selby Minner and the Friends of Rentiesville Blues Inc., the old cotton field out back will ring with the blues! D.C. (1935-2008, in 7 Halls of Fame) knew they were bulldozing old juke joints every day and has kept his family legacy alive here in Rentiesville, where he was born and raised, for people to enjoy from now on. There is a Gospel Show to start the Festivities on Sunday. The outdoor part is the most family friendly Blues festival you will find.

Oklahoma Today wrote: Red Dirt Blues – Many establishments are dedicated to the legacy of the blues, but none displays the spirit of the genre in Oklahoma like the former bootleg juke joint that is the Down Home Blues Club in Rentiesville. Years of People having FUN: .
The festival takes place in Rentiesville, the childhood home of famed blues singer/guitarist D.C. Minner, who founded the OBHOF in 2004 with his wife, Selby Minner. This year’s blues festival again brings in 200 performers from across Oklahoma and the US. D.C. Minner, in 7 Halls of Fame, is also an inductee of the Rhythm & Routes Oklahoma Music Trail. Visit the Rhythm & Routes website to learn more about the places in Oklahoma that inspired his career, listen to his music and browse an online collection of photos and videos. “The Oklahoma Film + Music Office (OF + MO) is thrilled for the continued success of the OBHOF” said OF + MO Deputy Director of Music Lindsey Flowers. “As an honoree on the Rhythm and Routes Oklahoma Music Trail, D.C. Minner has brought national attention to Oklahoma’s legendary blues music culture and this year’s Rentiesville celebrations will continue to honor his legacy.”

T H A N K S  S O  M U C H  for your support of our event! Deep Appreciation for supporting the arts in Oklahoma! The Blues Fest means a lot to many people and it is great to have you on board.

The simplicity of   Blues makes it user friendly to play and a great ‘gateway music’ to playing all genres of music. Blues is the language of African American history. It is a living language; capable of describing this history as it happens in the present as well as the past. It expresses not only events, but the reactions and feelings of the people who live through the events of their lives. D. C. Minner was one of the greatest speakers of that language in Oklahoma. He taught it to his wife Selby and she continues to be determined to pass it on to the next generation.

A great year. . . With lots of help . . . .

AN AWESOME AMOUNT OF VOLUNTEER TIME FUELS THE RENTIESVILLE FESTIVAL!

2017 review comments by OAC

This long-standing blues festival brings three days of live music to eastern Oklahoma. The event has a strong impact on the rural community, drawing audiences from across the state and nation. An anticipated 3,500 adults and 150 youth will be reached by this project. Ticket prices are affordable at $18/day with children and volunteers receiving free admission. The extensive lineup of performers include several OAC roster artists. Panelists found the proposed regional and national marketing plan effective and applauded the community need statement for demonstrating the festival’s economic value. OAC funds to partially cover artistic fees, excluding payment of Selby Minner and Blues on the Move band as host and festival organizer. OAC funds are to support a portion of artistic fees.

Review Comments 2016

The applicant described a long-standing cultural event in a very rural and underserved community. The event has a strong reputation and attracts audience members and musicians from outside Oklahoma. Thorough explanation of expenses and income. Low cost of tickets ensures that this event is accessible. Culturally diverse audience and performing artists. Recommendations for the Applicant: Continue to seek out increased sponsorship and increasing vendor fees to continue toward sustainability for the festival. Review and refine social media platforms and presence as a component of overall marketing and event promotion.

Review Comments 2015

This event brings in a unique group of musicians in a unique environment and underserved community. A grassroots festival with strong buy-in from the local community, and a festival that is rooted in the history of the area. Would assume this intimate setting creates a very personal experience for blues fans and musicians (both experienced and aspiring). Recommend they consider changing website to reflect festival brand. Organization does great outreach with students and seniors. Could use more details about “capital” expenses. Consider a ticket price increase as the price seems to have stayed the same for many years.

Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy. You vote in elections once a year, but when you volunteer, you vote every day about the kind of community you want to live in.
